In the category of unusual landscapes, we´ll find the hidden beach “Playa del Amor”. Is an open-air cafe that reveals a beach with a unique look! Off the coast of Mexico, not far from the bay of Bandera, Islas Marietas have remained untouched and inaccessible to tourists for years.

The hidden beach of Islas Marietas is located near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Nicknamed “Playa del Amor”, this unusual landscape is only accessible at low tide and you will have to swim across a cave to reach it.

The environment of the Playa Escondida (in Spanish) or Hidden Beach (in English) has developed for several years without any human disturbance. As a result, the fauna and flora are wild and intriguing, making this place as unique as it is exciting.

Located a few kilometers off the coast of Mexico, near the Bay of Bandera, the Marieta Islands are archipelagos that were formed as a result of volcanic activity. These islands have remained deserted for years. It is only recently that the recreational aspect of the place has been developed, with excursions to the hidden beach but also many activities offered by the diversity of the marine ecosystem.

Islas Marietas are one of the best spots for snorkeling and diving due to its pristine nature and the diversity it offers. Humpback whales, sea turtles, dolphins, and more than 100 species of fish are always present. It is also a renowned place for bird watching.

1. How to get to the hidden beach of Islas Marietas?

From Puerto Vallarta or its surroundings, you can easily find boats and sport excursions (kayaking, diving, snorkeling…) to the “Hidden Cave Beach”. Getting to the Hidden Cave Beach sometimes requires booking a boat in advance, which is very popular.

Departures are from Puerto Vallarta Maritime Terminal or the Vallarta Center in Nuevo Vallarta. It is also possible to find a local boat in Punta de Mita for a less touristy crossing.

To reach the hidden beach, you will have to arrive at low tide to swim in and out before being trapped in the water!

2. When to go to the hidden beach?

The weather remains pretty much the same throughout the year. It is surprisingly pleasant with 322 days of sunshine a year. Sunny days and cool, comfortable nights is a guarantee.

However, after the winter rains (in November), the water on the beach becomes exceptionally clear! Taking the beauty of the landscape to a whole new level.

4. What to do in the surroundings of Marietas?

The region of Puerto Vallarta, as much for the beauty of its landscapes as for its charming villages, is worth visiting.

Heading south, the road follows the contours of the coast as far as Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlan before going into the lush forest of the Sierra Madre. This road is lined with deep precipices and winding torrents.

Higher up, the climate is drier and cooler; the road winds its way through mountains and pine forests to reach a high plateau and the small village of El Tuito.
